THE
SURROUNDINGS
The Roussillon area of France is best known for the Pyrenees range of
mountains; for its coastline and ski-slopes; its history and its wines.
It is also a great area for bird lovers and walkers/hikers.
The immediate area around Rodes is great for walking or exploring the
beautiful French/Spanish border by car. On the other side of the main
road at Rodes is Vinca, a slightly larger village with a lake for swimming,
boating
and sailing.
The small towns and villages still retain their mediaeval characteristics
and there are a number of abbeys of interest and beauty.

The
limestone pinnacles of Les Orgues
The whole area is steeped in history, which ranges from the discovery
of prehistoric man at Tautavel, through to the history of the Catalans,
the many Cathay castles, and the very local geological changes of Les
Orgues.

The perched castle of Peyrepeteuse, on a craggy
limestone cliff
The area is well known for its 'healing waters'.
During the turn of the century this was a popular
spa area, the remains of some of these can still
be seen in the valleys and hills. In many you can
enjoy the warm sulpher baths (winter and summer).
It is incredible to lie in one of the steamy baths
whilst it is snowing, a very unusual and
rewarding experience.
Approaching
Rodes
The village of Rodes is almost on the border of
Spain.
Barcelona is only a 2.5 hour drive away. Skiing in the
Pyrenees is about 1 - 1.5 hours drive, while the excellent
beaches on the East coast, beyond Perpignan, can
also be reached in about 45 mins.
